For now, we know that the “indebted” artist died in the apartment of Madanayakanahalli – The Week

Renowned Kannada actor-director Guruprasad was found dead on Sunday in an apartment in Madanayakanahalli, Bengaluru. The artist, who would have turned 52 on November 2, died by suicide at least four days ago, police said, based on the condition of his body when it was found.

Guruprasad, whose full name is Guruprasad Ramachandra Sharma, is best known for his debut film “Mata”, which remains a cult hit in the Kannada film industry. His other directorial credits include Eddelu Manjunatha (2009), which won the Karnataka State Film Award for Best Screenplay, Director’s Special (2013), Eradane Sala (2017) and Ranganayaka (2024).

Some media reports said that the popular director was struggling with financial problems, which forced him to take a radical step. Reports indicate that Guruprasad was married twice but lived alone. This is what we know so far about the death of the Sandalwood actor and director.

According to Kannada media reports, Guruprasad changed houses to avoid people to whom he owed money. He initially lived in a rented house in Basaveshwaranagara, Bengaluru and then moved to another rented property in Jayanagar. When his lenders started knocking on the door, Guruprasad started staying in hotels, One India Kannada said in a report. The report added that he lived in a flat in Dasanapura before moving to Madanayakanahalli, where he breathed his last.

Many cases were filed against him by people who lent him money. According to another report, Guruprasad was arrested by the Girinagar police in January and released on bail in one such case. He also faced arrest in a check bounce case.

The lukewarm reception to his latest film Ranganayaka in theaters was a huge blow to him financially. He also owed money to friends and associates, and his inability to repay any of them reportedly haunted him.
