NEW DELHI, NOVEMBER 3

Rohit Bal, one of India’s most famous fashion designers, died late on Friday evening after a long-term illness, announced the association of fashion designers in this country. He was 63 years old.

The Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) said in an Instagram post that it mourned “the passing of (a) legendary designer” who was “known for his unique blend of traditional designs with modern sensibilities.”

Bal was one of the first Indian designers to pioneer fashion design in the 1990s. FDCI said Bal’s work “redefined Indian fashion” and “inspired generations.”

In 2010, he suffered from heart disease. In the meantime, Bal has been taking some time off work due to poor health, but returned to action just a few weeks ago.

Bal was born in 1961 in India-controlled Kashmir’s main city, Srinagar. He graduated in history from St. Stephens College, New Delhi, and later took a fashion design course at India’s National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi.

In 1990, he launched his own brand and designer line, which later expanded to several stores in India, the Middle East and Europe. His clientele included Hollywood stars and the rich and famous in India.

Sunil Sethi, president of FDCI, said on Instagram that his death has left “a void in the fashion design space forever.”
