Iran arrests student who stripped in protest over dress code

Iranian authorities on Saturday arrested a student who organized an independent protest by stripping down to her underwear in a public place. Reports indicate that the action was intended to draw attention to the repressive enforcement of Iran’s dress code, which requires women to wear a headscarf and loose clothing in public places.

Iranian authorities reportedly arrested a student on Saturday after she staged a solo anti-harassment protest by stripping down to her underwear outside a university.

According to reports from several news outlets and social media channels, an unidentified woman was harassed at the prestigious Islamic Azad University in Tehran by members of the Basij paramilitary force, who tore her headscarf and clothes. Iran.

She then stripped off her clothes in protest and sat outside the university wearing only her underwear before defiantly walking down the street, much to the astonishment of passersby, videos posted on social media showed.

Under Iran’s dress code, women must wear a headscarf and loose clothing in public places.

The footage, which was first published by Iranian student social media channel Amir Kabir Newsletter, was published by multiple Persian-language media outlets, including rights group Hengaw and news website Iran Wire, as well as Amnesty International.

The video appeared to have been shot by onlookers in a neighboring building. Another video shows men in civilian clothes pulling her into a car and taking her to an unknown location.
