A Hong Kong prison chief swears he is “never afraid” after a brutal attack on an officer

The head of Hong Kong’s prison service has said his department will not be deterred by brutal intimidation following a recent crime attack at an officer outside the prison, which was allegedly carried out by a group of men associated with the triad.

Correctional Services Commissioner Wong Kwok-hing condemned the attack on Sunday as he visited the United Christian Hospital in Kwun Tong to see the injured officer, who he said was in stable condition.

“The Correctional Services Department (CSD) has strongly condemned the unlawful violence and we believe that the attackers were blatantly challenging the rule of law and undermining social order,” he said.

“Every colleague in the Department of Correctional Services is a professional law enforcement officer and will never fear any form of violent threats.

“The CSD will maintain its position and act in accordance with the law to ensure order and discipline in the institution.

Wong, however, refused to clarify whether the officer was attacked because of a personal dispute with his attackers, saying the case was still under investigation and it was inappropriate to reveal further details.
