EAU CLAIRE, Mich. (WNDU) – The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office has identified the victim and suspect in a fatal shooting early Saturday morning in Eau Claire.

Officers were called just before 12:45 a.m. to the intersection of Main Street and Elm Street.

When they arrived, they say they found two male victims. One of them was unconscious and suffered life-threatening injuries, the other suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Both victims were taken to hospital, where one of them later died. The victim was identified as 36-year-old Chad Medlin of Benton Harbor.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office told us Medlin was a firefighter in Eau Claire. This was also confirmed by the Eau Claire Fire Department in a Facebook post.

“Today is a sad day for our department. We lost a friend. A fellow firefighter. Someone who served his country,” said Eau Claire Fire Chief Norm Carl. “We will accomplish this task because that is who we are and who you would like us to be. But each step will be just a little more difficult. Watch over us, brother Chad Medlin, we will take it from here.

Police say they quickly identified 47-year-old Rigoberto Gomez of Eau Claire as the suspect with the help of witnesses. Gomez was arrested and is being held in the Berrien County Jail on multiple charges.
