4 people killed and 17 injured after semi-truck collides with vehicles stuck in traffic jam

LANSING, Mich. (WILX/Gray News) – Four people are dead and 17 others injured after a truck collided with stranded vehicles late Saturday night.

The crash occurred around 11:43 p.m. on I-96 in Ingham County, Michigan.

The westbound lane of I-96 was closed while crews stretched power lines across the expressway, according to Michigan State Police. When police reopened the lanes, several vehicles were still stopped when a semi-truck plowed into the stopped vehicles.

Police estimate that about 15 vehicles were involved in the accident.

According to the authorities, the semi-trailer driver did not notice the stopped traffic and did not have time to stop.

A truck and several other vehicles caught fire.

17 injured people with serious injuries were transported to hospitals.

I-96 near M-52 is expected to be closed indefinitely.
