A mother of five may be left permanently disabled by an attack after a night out

HOUSTON, Texas (KHOU) – A woman may be left permanently disabled after being allegedly stalked and assaulted after a night out.

Shameka Fortner said she visits her oldest child, 31-year-old Javoni, every day, who is still in the hospital.

“You know, as a mom, as long as she’s in a good mood, I’m in a good mood,” Fortner said.

Javoni Fortner, a mother of five, also works two jobs.

She went for some self-care, taking time for herself at the paint and drink party on September 29.

Javoni Fortner finally took a rideshare back to her home.

Around 9:30 p.m. that same day, Shameka Fortner received a call about her daughter.

“I could hear the hysterics in her voice and she was just screaming, ‘Mom, mom, someone tried to beat me to death with a stick,'” Shameka Fortner said.

Police said Javoni Fortner was likely attacked with a baton or bat, and the suspect may have fled in a black sedan.

Javoni Fortner suffered serious injuries, but her mother hopes witnesses will come forward.

Although the attacker was not seen, the family suspects it was someone Javoni Fortner knew.

Shameka Fortner believes the suspect may be someone her daughter rejected. She also said she thought her daughter used something to defend herself.

“I still have the purse she was holding, and if it weren’t for her, I probably would have buried my daughter last weekend,” she said. “So yes, she will be disabled for the rest of her life.”

Shameka Fortner said she is grateful her daughter is alive but hopes the suspect will be found.

“The capture of this person must be a top priority. There’s no telling how many times he did it,” Shameka Fortner said.

The family also founded GoFundMe page help pay for medical expenses.

They also said they wanted to thank the person who found Javoni Fortner and called 911.
