Pitt County Schools appoints first African-American superintendent

PITT COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – History was made when an East Carolina County school district named a new superintendent tonight.

During its 5 p.m. meeting, the Pitt County Board of Education voted to appoint Dr. Steve Lassiter as permanent superintendent.

Lassiter is the first African American to hold this position in Pitt County.

– WITN reported On May 6, Lassiter will take over as interim superintendent following the retirement of former superintendent Dr. Ethan Lenker.

Lassiter was the school district’s assistant superintendent. The Edenton native began his education career in 2004 as a teacher after graduating from ECU.
