Old Vail High School student identified as victim of fatal train crash

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – The person killed in a train crash involving pedestrians near Colossal Cave Road on Friday, Nov. 1, has been identified as an Old Vail Middle School student.

The Vail School District confirmed the death of an eighth-grade student and said the district was offering support and resources to the student’s classmates.

“It is with a very heavy heart that I write to inform you of the recent loss our Old Vail community has suffered,” OVMS Principal Julia Kaiser wrote in a letter to parents. “One of our eighth-grade students died on Friday afternoon. Please join us in sharing your thoughts and prayers with her family as they deal with this devastating loss.”

Union Pacific confirmed that one person died and the train crew were uninjured. Union Pacific said the person was not in the aisle at the time of impact and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Kaiser said starting Monday, counselors, therapy dogs and outside community support will be available at the library.

“You can find the following source of information, When a loved one dies – how children grieve and how parents and other adults can support themhelpful in talking to your child at home,” Kaiser said. “You can also find helpful resources within the organization This is Nidita who works with children, young people, teenagers and their families to understand and process grief.

Kaiser also told the families Soothing careservice provided by the district.

It was at least the fifth train accident in the Tucson area this year.
