City councilor charged with assault

During Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting, Coun. Trevor Giertuga has revealed he is facing assault charges following an incident involving his brother.

THUNDER BAY – Coun. Trevor Giertuga says he faces assault charges following a June altercation with one of his brothers.

The full councilor denied the allegations, making the assault allegation public during Monday’s committee of the whole session.

“I will have my day in court where all the circumstances will come to light. I believe I will be vindicated, but I just want the public to know.”

Giertuga said the case would be heard in court next week, but he wanted to come forward now and “stay true to (his) ideals of transparency and openness to society.”

He said the argument between the two brothers should not have gone beyond an elementary school wrestling match.

“It was a matter between two brothers, siblings and a family matter that should have stayed in the family, but it didn’t. I’m sorry,” Giertuga said.

“The real victim is my mother, who has been through so much.”
