Liam Payne’s funeral will take place today and former One Direction band members will pay their respects

The funeral from ex One direction star Liam Payne will take place on Wednesday, just over a month after his death after falling from the balcony of his hotel in Buenos Aires.

Payne who gained worldwide fame thanks to the boy band One Directiondied at the age of 31, sparking tributes from fans around the world.

Earlier this month, Payne’s body was handed over to his father and flown back to England.

Several newspapers, including the Daily Mail and the Daily Mirror, stated that all four were members of Payne’s One Direction band: Harry StylesZayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan will attend the funeral to pay their respects.

In a statement four said they were “absolutely devastated” by the death of their former bandmate.

“With time and when everyone can, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to mourn and process the loss of our brother whom we loved very much. The memories we experienced with him will remain in our minds forever. For now, our thoughts are with his family, friends and fans who loved him with us. We will miss him terribly. We love you, Liam,” they said.

The funeral will be a private ceremony for family and close friends.

A 911 call from a hotel employee on the day of Payne’s death warned that he was acting aggressively and may have been under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

An autopsy revealed that the former boy band member had traces of alcohol, cocaine and prescription antidepressants in his system at the time of his death.

Three people were charged in connection with his death.

Payne rose to fame alongside Styles, Tomlinson, Malik and Horan when Simon Cowell brought them together to form One Direction on ITV talent show The X Factor in 2010.

He first auditioned in 2008 when he was 14, singing Frank Sinatra’s Fly Me To The Moon, and judge Cowell made him return to the talent show two years later.

In 2010, he impressed the judges with his performance of Michael Buble’s Cry Me A River and was placed with four other solo hopefuls in the boot camp stage – the group that would later become One Direction.

Payne, who was born in Wolverhampton, launched a successful solo career, releasing his debut solo album LP1 in December 2019, which included the songs Polaroid and Strip That Down featuring Quavo.

One of his most famous songs, For You, was a collaboration with him and singer Rita Ora for the film Fifty Shades Freed.

Payne is survived by his parents, two sisters and his son, Bear, whom he had with Girls Aloud singer Cheryl.

Payne’s late girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, is also expected to attend the funeral.
