A 24-year-old man was fatally shot by Springfield police Thursday night, officials said.

Police Superintendent Lawrence Akers said at 1 a.m. on Lyman Street after a report of a man with a gun. press conference after the shooting.

When officers arrived at the scene, they came into contact with a man holding two firearms at the entrance to the apartment building. according to the statement from Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni.

“Due to circumstances that remain under investigation, two officers fired their service pistol and one struck the 24-year-old, injuring him,” the statement reads.

Officers provided medical treatment to the man and transported him to Baystate Medical Center, but he died from his injuries, Akers said.

At a news conference, the superintendent said he would allow police involved in the shooting “to take necessary leave to ensure their mental health is sound.”

The Hampden District Attorney’s Office and the Springfield Police Department Detective Bureau continue to investigate the incident.

“I want to express my deepest and sincere condolences to the family of the young man who lost his life this morning,” Akers said. “I hope they find strength and support as they go through this painful loss.”
