Conor McGregor found guilty of assaulting a woman in Dublin in 2018

A civil court jury in Ireland on Friday found UFC fighter Conor McGregor liable for sexual assault and awarded the woman who accused him of rape almost 250,000 euros ($257,000). according to the Associated Press.

According to AP, a 12-person jury at the High Court in Dublin reached its verdict after six hours of deliberation. According to the AP, a woman accused McGregor of raping her in a Dublin hotel on December 9, 2018, claiming that the attack after a night of partying left her with bruises and caused her to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder.

McGregor denied the allegations, testifying that he never forced the woman to do anything against her will. According to the AP, McGregor said the two had consensual sex.

McGregor did not comment on the case as he left the courtroom, but posted on X that he would appeal the decision.

Lawyers for McGregor and the woman did not immediately respond to requests for comment Athlete.

On Friday, the woman made a short statement to the court. Athlete does not typically name victims or potential victims of sexual violence.

“I hope my story will remind all survivors of sexual violence that no matter how afraid you are, speak up, you have a voice and continue to fight for justice,” she said. according to the BBC. “I know it has had a huge impact on not only my life, my daughter, my family and friends, and it is something I will never forget for the rest of my life. But now that justice has been served, I can now try to move on and look to the future with my family, friends and daughter.”

According to the AP, in court the woman testified that McGregor choked her and threatened to kill her during the incident. Her lawyer said McGregor was angry about the fight he lost in Las Vegas in October 2018.

McGregor stated in his testimony that the woman’s story was untrue.

McGregor has not faced criminal charges in the case. The police launched an investigation, but prosecutors refused to file charges, AP reports.

McGregor lost that fight in 2018 to Khabib Nurmagomedov, who submitted McGregor by choke. The acrimonious atmosphere around the fight sparked carnage outside the Octagon immediately after it ended, ultimately leading to suspensions for Nurmagomedov and McGregor. Since then, 36-year-old McGregor has fought three times in the UFC. McGregor, a former two-division champion, has not fought since breaking his leg in the first round of a 2021 loss to Dustin Poirier. He hasn’t won a fight since January 2020.
