Bronx police-involved shooting: 19-year-old shot in leg after pointing gun at officer in Soundview

SOUND VIEW, Bronx (WABC) — A 19-year-old suspect was shot in the leg after he pointed a gun at an officer responding to a dispute in the Bronx, according to NYPD officials.

The incident occurred near a high-rise building located at 755 White Plains Road in Soundview just after 3 p.m.

Police say an officer and a sergeant responded to the scene after a report of a large dispute involving a firearm.

When they reached the back of the place, they encountered two people. Body camera footage shows the suspect pulling out a gun and pointing it at officers.

The suspect was then shot twice in the left leg by police.

The police then provided assistance, took him into custody and transported him to Jacobi Hospital, where he is expected to be OK.

Meanwhile, police are still looking for the second man who was with the suspect at the time of the incident. He fled onto Lafayette Avenue and was described as wearing gray sweatpants and a white hoodie.

New York police officials say the suspect did not fire any shots and no officers were injured.

A gun and two knives were found at the scene.

Eyewitness News said the suspect is 19 years old and a gang member who has been arrested several times before. Officials say he was arrested and charged in September with possession of a loaded firearm. Prosecutors asked for a $25,000 bond, but instead the suspect was released on supervised release and returned to the streets.

“This is the second time this week that there has been someone walking through the Bronx community in the Soundview section with a semi-automatic weapon who was arrested three months ago on the streets of Manhattan and charged… it probably should have never happened.” said NYPD Bureau of Patrol Chief John Chell.

This comes just a few days after the police confronted by a suspect armed with a deadly weapon in Queens on Tuesday evening.

The suspect in this incident was involved in two armed robberies before he was shot and killed during a shootout with police.

During Friday night’s briefing, Chell expressed frustration with the criminal justice system after another suspect with a criminal history was put back on the street.

“Our criminal justice system needs fixing, you saw it this week with three people stabbed in the street, you saw it in Queens where our cops confronted a career criminal on life parole who had just committed two robberies that evening, people were shot , a citizen intervened and shot our officer in the leg,” Chell said. “We are very frustrated. We have to fix this.”
