Mayor Stoney on shooting of 17-year-old in South Richmond: ‘Devastating’

RICHMOND, Va. – A 17-year-old boy shot and killed early Wednesday morning on Richmond’s Southside, prompting calls for accountability and reflection from city leaders.

Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney called the event “devastating not only for the family involved, not only for the neighborhood, but for the entire community.”

Richmond Public Schools confirmed Friday that the victim was a student, but did not say which school he attended.

Stoney noted that the teenager was associated with “different school families” and expressed sympathy for those affected by the situation.

According to Richmond police, the shooting occurred at an apartment complex on Snead Road around 2:30 a.m.

Witnesses living in or near the complex reported hearing about 10 shots, but said the area was mostly quiet.

Police say the victim was transported to a gas station on Broad Rock Boulevard by an unknown person or group. No additional details about suspects or motives have been released, but Stoney said police have a lead in the case.

“I know the Richmond Police Department has some leads on this particular case. We will hold those involved accountable,” Stoney said.

The mayor also called for a deeper investigation into the factors that led to the shooting.

“We do everything we can to create a safety net so our children don’t fall through the cracks. And when one child falls into the trap, we obviously have to assess what caused it,” Stoney said.

Richmond Police are asking anyone with information to contact Major Crimes or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers by calling 804-780-1000 or using the P3 Tips app.
