Franciscan Health, in partnership with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, will host the LivingWorks Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) course on Wednesday, December 4 and Thursday, December 5 at Franciscan Health Orthopedic Hospital, 10777 Illinois St., Carmel.

The course will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, and participants must be present on both days of the course to receive a certificate. Participants must too register for the course.

LivingWorks ASIST is a two-day workshop with two trainers, intended for members of all care groups. Family, friends and other community members may be the first to talk to an at-risk person, but they have little or no training in dealing with them. ASIST can also provide professional development to formal support workers to ensure they are prepared to provide suicide first aid as part of the care they provide.

The course focuses on teaching first aid for suicide to help the person at risk stay safe and seek further help if needed. Participants learn how to use the suicide intervention model to identify people with suicidal thoughts, seek a shared understanding of causes of death and life, develop a safe plan based on risk assessment, be prepared to follow up, and engage in a suicide-safer community.

The learning process used is based on the principles of adult learning and is characterized by a high level of participation. Gradual skill development takes place through mini-lectures, moderated discussions, group simulations and role-playing.

The course will be taught by Tina Hoffman, Community Health Improvement Coordinator at Franciscan Health.

Register here for the ASIST suicide intervention course taking place on December 4–5.
