Police officers from Kiamunyi Police Station in Nakuru are tracking down a man who allegedly tried to murder a woman.

In a statement on Saturday, police said they received a report of an attack on Florence Wanjiku Gichohi on Friday.

This happened after she was found with several stab wounds and her hands severed.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was attacked by her boyfriend, who is also her business partner,” police said.

“The case is pending the arrest of a known person, which is being handled by OCS Menengai.”

According to the police, the incident took place at their rented house.

According to the police, Wanjiku is currently in a serious condition in hospital.

Meanwhile, the police announced that actions are underway to arrest the suspect.

The officers asked the suspect to report to the nearest police station or police officer.

The police also appealed to the public to forward any information that could lead to his arrest to the nearest police station.

President William Ruto on Friday urged the National Defense University to focus on the challenges causing femicide cases in the country.

In a speech while presiding over the second graduation ceremony of the Kenya Defense University, Lanet, Nakuru County, Ruto said the escalation of femicide in Kenya was worrisome and required deeper understanding through proper research.

“What is the place of family, society and religion in the upbringing of a morally upright generation? We want to understand what drives someone to commit femicide and where in all of this society has taken a laid-back approach. Where does all this leave our culture?” he asked.

On Wednesday, the president announced a 16-day campaign against gender-based violence, including the recent cases of femicide in the country.

President Ruto noted that the Safe Homes, Safe Spaces campaign will commence on Monday, November 25.

Ruto announced an allocation of £100 million to support the program.

“I call on every Kenyan to join this movement to speak out, educate and unite against cases of femicide. Our communities need education about the signs and causes of violence and the resources available to victims,” Ruto said.

“Awareness is a key step in prevention. We need to raise awareness of the availability of such campaigns where victims can get shelter through free platforms such as GBV 1195, Child Help 116 and the anonymous DCI reporting number 0800722203.”

Cases of femicide are on the rise, with 97 cases reported in the last three months alone, underscoring the scale of the crisis.

Amnesty International reported that over 500 cases of femicide were recorded in Kenya between 2016 and 2023.

A 2022 study found that at least one in three women have experienced physical violence at some point in their lives.
