Portage High School held a moment of silence Saturday to remember a staff member who was torn from their lives.

“Brandy wasn’t just a friend. She was a mother, mentor and friend to many people,” the director said at the meeting. “Her kindness, wisdom and unwavering support touched the hearts of all who knew her.”

She was a fierce protector of her children and everyone she loved.

Olivia Chelich, the victim’s friend

Police in Portage, Indiana, said Manville was one of three people shot Friday night at a home on Monument Avenue near Blacker Street. Police said that around 7:41 p.m. officers received a report of a “domestic disturbance” at the home.

Relatives told ABC7 that her 21-year-old daughter, a former high school student, was the only one of the three to survive the shooting.

“She had something to live for,” said Manville’s best friend, Olivia Chelich.

Those who knew the 46-year-old woman remember her as a great parent and educator.

“Brandy was the best mother anyone could ask for,” Chelich said. “She lived and breathed her children. No child left her office hungry. Not a single child left her office upset. It was always with a smile.”

Police responded to the home after receiving a 911 call from a person reporting that their father was intoxicated, throwing objects and armed with a gun. Police say that during the same phone call, operators heard a man say, “everyone is going to die,” and then the sounds of gunshots.

According to police, when officers arrived at the scene and forced their way inside, they found 45-year-old Charles Manville dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, as well as Brandy and her daughter.

Students and staff are struggling with the tragedy that has occurred.

“I’m so sorry. It’s unfair,” Chelich said. “It wasn’t supposed to be like this.”

Police say they believe it was an isolated shooting and there is no threat to the public. Investigators told ABC7 that the surviving victim was unable to provide a statement at this time, so the motive is unclear. ABC7 was told the 21-year-old’s condition is currently stable, but she still has serious, life-threatening injuries.

“She was a fierce protector of her children and everyone she loved,” Chelich said.
