The authorities of Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur have provisionally suspended two teachers and seven officials-staff for their alleged involvement in the murder of Abu Sayeed during the anti-discrimination student movement.

Abu Sayeed, a 12th batch student at the Department of English, was shot dead by police outside the university during the anti-discrimination student movement on July 16.

The university authorities also banned all forms of party politics on campus.

“The decisions were taken at the 108th Syndicate meeting of the university held at the university’s administration building today,” Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Showkat Ali told reporters at a press conference this afternoon.

Earlier, the university administration had formed a three-member fact-finding committee to identify teachers, students, officials and university employees involved in Abu Sayeed’s murder and determine the type of punishment for them.

The fact-finding committee had recently submitted a report and today’s syndicate meeting took the decisions after discussing the report’s findings.

The vice-chancellor said: “In line with the syndicate’s decision, a case will be initiated against all teachers, officials, staff and 72 students who were involved in the murder of Abu Sayeed.”

He said that teachers, officials and employees cannot be members of any political organization.

“If anyone is still involved in this matter, action will be taken against them under the laws of the university,” he added.
