A detective accused of sexually assaulting women on duty dies by suicide

A former White police detective facing federal charges stemming from allegations that he sexually assaulted two Black women while on duty was found dead in his home on Monday, December 2, in an apparent suicide.

Roger Golubski, 71, who was about to go on trial for alleged civil rights violations, died from a gunshot wound, according to a news release from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. There were no immediate signs of foul play and the investigation into his death remains ongoing, according to the release.

Golubski was found on the porch of his Edwardsville home after a neighbor called 911 just after 9 a.m. Monday.

The same day after Golubski was found dead, federal prosecutors asked U.S. District Judge Toby Crouse to drop charges against the former police officer. Related Press reported.

“This case involved extremely serious allegations and that was it It is always difficult when a case cannot be fully and fairly heard in a public trial and heard and decided by a jury,” said Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Civil Rights Division and U.S. Attorney Kate E. Brubacher of the District of Kansas. in a statement obtained by PEOPLE. “The proceedings in this case may be over, but its lasting impact on all the individuals and families involved remains. We wish them peace and healing as they come to terms with this situation, and ask that everyone be treated with respect and have their privacy respected.”

Golubski was indicted in 2022 on six federal civil rights charges. According to a federal indictment, he was accused of sexual assault on more than 10 occasions between 1999 and 2001. Golubski repeatedly threatened the girl, who was 13 when the alleged abuse began, saying he would kill her or her grandmother if she told authorities, according to the indictment.

According to the indictment, the second alleged victim stated that Golubski raped and sexually assaulted her several times over the course of two or three years. The abuse allegedly occurred shortly after Golubski arrested her two sons.

Golubski was later charged with conspiracy for his involvement in a sex trafficking ring involving underage girls in the 1990s. New York Times.

Golubski, who worked for the Kansas City, Kansas, police department for 35 years, pleaded not guilty to all charges. His lawyer could not be reached for comment.

Civil rights allegations against Golubski first came to light when he and police were sued over Golubski’s alleged role in framing then-teen Lamonte McIntyre for a 1994 double murder. CNN reported.

McIntyre spent 23 years in prison before being released. He later settled the lawsuit with the county for $12. According to CNN, 5 million.

In October, Rapper Jay Z’s Team ROC, the criminal justice arm of his entertainment organization Roc Nation, sued the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department, alleging that police and city officials violated public records laws by hampering their efforts to obtain documents related to abuses and police misconduct, NBC News reported.
