According to police, the security guards, identified as Segun Sodiya and Segun Abatan, falsely accused Aliu of trying to steal his employer’s belongings while he was in the process of moving them to a new location.

Police launch a full investigation

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, in a statement to the press on Wednesday, shared details of the tragic incident.

She explained that Aliu was assisting his employer in relocating from his previous residence to a new location in the Ijokun area when the attack occurred around 7 a.m.

Odutola stated that while performing his duties, Aliu came across two security guards employed by one of the local residents, Kingsley Nwabueze. The guards, who allegedly mistook Aliu for a thief, doused him with a flammable substance and set him on fire.

“According to reports, Aliu was helping his employer move his belongings when he was brutally attacked by Sodiya and Abatan,” Odutola confirmed.

“The duo believed he was trying to steal the items he was transporting and as a result set it on fire.”

The suspects will be charged with attempted murder

The police spokesman also revealed that the suspects were detained and will be charged with attempted murder.

She urged the public not to take matters into their own hands and urged people to report suspicions to the police rather than resorting to violent action.

“This tragic incident is a reminder that such actions are not only illegal, but also dangerously wrong,” Odutola added.

“The suspects will face the full force of the law, and we encourage residents to remain vigilant and contact authorities as appropriate.”
