BC wineries could once again sell directly to consumers in Alberta

VANCOUVER — British Columbia wineries can sell their products directly to Alberta consumers again this week, months after an interprovincial agreement between the two provinces was announced last summer.

This process allows Albertans to order wine from over 300 BC wineries in exchange for the Government of Alberta receiving a portion of applicable taxes.

The agreement will be valid for one year, after which its effectiveness will be assessed.

This follows an impasse that began last January when Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis – the agency that regulates alcohol sales in the province – announced it would no longer stock wine from British Columbia producers that had bypassed it in Alberta stores. and sold directly by Albertans.

At the time, the agency said direct-to-consumer shipping companies were circumventing Alberta’s regulations and siphoning money from its general revenue fund.

Premier David Eby said in a statement that the new direct sales program is a “win” for wineries and communities that depend on the industry.

“By working with Alberta, we support economic growth and strengthen the bonds between our provinces,” Eby says in the release.
