The woman claims her family scolded her for refusing to be the designated driver

  • A woman asked Reddit if she was wrong after she told her family she wouldn’t be their designated driver on New Year’s Eve.
  • She revealed that she has been a designated driver for seven years and wanted at least one celebration to just relax.
  • The woman’s family reacted negatively to her decision, sending her text messages calling her “dramatic” and “selfish” and accusing her of “ruining the evening.”

A woman’s decision to give up her family-designated driver’s title on New Year’s Eve led to a family argument and her being labeled “selfish.”

In a recent post on the popular Reddit site, “Am I A——?” on the forum, a 26-year-old woman described how her annual alcohol-fuelled family celebration was a breaking point for her in the expectation that she would make sure everyone got home safely.

“Don’t get me wrong, I love my family, but it’s starting to worry me. This has been going on since I was 19, even before I was allowed to drink legally,” she said.

He explains that since he “doesn’t drink much – maybe a glass of wine or beer,” he “doesn’t mind driving people home if they need it.” But increasing entitlements and demands over the past few years had made the woman nervous, even though she didn’t want to “let anyone down.”

“Let’s fast forward to this year’s New Year’s Eve. I told my family in advance that I would no longer be a DD. “I just wanted to enjoy the evening, have a few drinks and not be responsible for getting everyone home,” the Redditor said.

The woman continued by saying that while she was having fun at a family party, a relative asked her again to be the designated driver, even though she had already declined.

“My cousin came and asked if I was ready to take everyone home. I reminded her that I wasn’t driving tonight, I was here to enjoy the party. She looked at me like I was crazy and said, “Come on, you always drive! Don’t be a bitch,” the woman recalls.

The woman disagreed and stated that she “wouldn’t be a chauffeur anymore.” Her aunt then chimed in and “eduged her” by saying, “Last year we all agreed that you would drive. You know how much we rely on you. Everyone else is too drunk and Ubering is very dangerous. Just ride it once, for the family.

Continuing to refuse, the woman stated that her aunt “got even more upset”, called her “selfish” and insisted that she drive, even though the woman revealed that she had “already had three beers, so even legally I wasn’t allowed to drive alone.”

The Reddit user said that when she “snapped” and told her family they “needed to find their own transportation” before she “got up and left.”

The woman said that after getting an Uber ride home, she “spent the rest of New Year’s Eve at home watching Netflix and eating leftover pasta with my boyfriend.”

Although the evening ended on a pleasant note, the woman stated that her family sent text messages describing her as “dramatic, selfish and ‘ruining the evening’.”

The woman was then told that her entire family was “disappointed” with her and now “demands an apology.”

Other Reddit users overwhelmingly sided with the woman, agreeing with her stance that she is no longer the family’s designated driver.

“Your family’s reaction is excessive. You clearly established boundaries ahead of time and they ignored them. “Wanting to celebrate like everyone else instead of always being the designated driver is not selfish,” one user wrote.

“They are selfish and manipulative. They are not interested in your feelings. Don’t apologize. Spend next year somewhere else,” added another.
