A Swiss citizen committed suicide in an Iranian prison

DUBAI – A Swiss citizen arrested in Iran and accused of espionage took his own life in prison on Thursday, a Semnan provincial judge said, as quoted by the judicial news agency Mizan.

“This morning, a Swiss citizen committed suicide in a prison in Semnan. This Swiss national has been arrested by security agencies for espionage… and his case is being investigated,” said Mohammad Sadeq Akbari.

Mizan gave no further details about the Swiss national’s identity and added that efforts to resuscitate the prisoner were unsuccessful.

Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guard has arrested dozens of dual nationals and foreigners in recent years, mostly on espionage and security-related charges.

Switzerland plays an important intermediary role between Washington and Tehran because it represents American interests in Iran and relays messages between the two countries. REUTERS
