A woman from MN allegedly downloaded 360,000. deceased mother’s Social Security dollars

A 54-year-old woman is facing federal fraud charges after allegedly defrauding $360,000 in Social Security taxes over 25 years by posing as her deceased mother.

Mavious Redmond, of Austin, faces three counts of wire fraud, one count of theft of government funds and one count of aggravated identity theft, in connection with posing as her mother since the elderly woman’s death in January 1999.

Investigators say Redmond failed to notify the Social Security Administration after her mother’s death. Court documents show that at one point, Redmond asked Social Security officials questions about how her mother’s benefits would be terminated in the event of her death.

Court records show that Redmond continued to access money in her mother’s accounts after her death, sometimes for years by allegedly impersonating her mother in order to continue collecting monthly retirement benefits. In November 2023, she called the Social Security Administration, trying to change her mother’s address to her home in Austin.

Redmond became a suspect in June 2024 after she allegedly visited the Social Security Administration office in Austin twice, posing as her mother and attempting to obtain a new Social Security card for her. Court documents show Redmond produced an expired insurance card, a birth certificate and a letter from Social Security officials addressed to her mother.

Redmond will face an impeachment hearing in March.
