(The Center Square) – California Assemblymember Kate Sanchez, R-Sacramento, has introduced a bill that would prohibit biological males from participating in women’s sports.

Assembly Bill (AB) 89, also known as the Protect Girls’ Sports Act, would force the California Interscholastic Federation to “amend its constitution, bylaws and policies to prohibit a student whose sex was assigned male at birth from participating in girls’ interscholastic sports.” sports team.”

Sanchez’s bill seeks to amend California law AB 1266which has been on the books for 12 years.

This law states that the state’s public schools cannot discriminate on the basis of “sex, gender identity and gender expression.”

Moreover, Sanchez’s bill states that people must be able to participate in “sex-segregated school programs and activities, including sports teams and competitions” that correspond to their gender identity.

In announcing the bill, Sanchez he said Fairness in women’s sports is “taken away”.

“When biological men are allowed to compete in women’s sports, it creates an unfair playing field. “Young women who have spent years training, sacrificing and earning a place to compete at the highest level are now forced to compete against those with an undeniable biological advantage,” Sanchez said. “It’s not only unfair. It’s depressing and dangerous.”

Additionally, Sanchez stated that it was about the “safety” of the girls.

“Whether it’s contact sports, locker rooms or shared spaces, these policies put our daughters at risk. We cannot ignore the physical and emotional consequences this is causing,” she added.

Sanchez said it was “time to restore integrity to women’s athletics and ensure every young woman has a fair and safe opportunity to compete.”

California is one of 24 states that allow biological men to compete in women’s sports, According to Inches matter.

In November 2024, two players defendant Riverside Unified School District after their high school allegedly gave preferential treatment to a transgender athlete.

“Plaintiffs claim that the school’s selective enforcement of dress code and failure to comply with Title IX violate their constitutional rights and place female athletes at an unfair disadvantage,” reads a press release from the Advocates for Faith and Freedom.

California is also home to San Jose State University, where the school allowed Blair Fleming, a biological male, to compete on the women’s volleyball team.

Five of the university’s rival teams forfeited games in protest of Fleming’s presence on the team.

In November 2024, San Jose State University women’s volleyball team co-captain Brooke Slusser joined a lawsuit against the NCAA for allowing biological males to compete in women’s sports.

Last month, the nonprofit Independent Women’s Forum revived a letter campaign asking the NCAA to keep men out of women’s college sports, The Center Square reported.

According to Gallup vote in 2023, 69% of Americans said transgender athletes should not be allowed to compete on sports teams that match their gender identity.
