The Atlanta Hawks will wrap up their six-game road trip tonight in Phoenix with a matchup against the Suns. It wasn’t the best away trip for the Hawks as they had 2-3 wins, but they played without forward Jalen Johnson for most of the trip. That will continue tonight as the Hawks will play without Johnson for the third straight season and fourth in the last five games. It hasn’t been pretty without Johnson for the Hawks, but tonight they’ll face one of the most disappointing teams in the league.

Phoenix started the season with title hopes, and after a hot start, it looked like the hiring of former Hakws coach Mike Budenholzer was paying off for the Suns. However, it didn’t go well. This team is currently outside the top 10 in the Western Conference, with Bradley Beal coming off the bench and Devin Booker not playing at his usual level across the NBA. This team has talent, but they have not shown it every day, as evidenced by Tuesday’s defeat against Charlotte. Even without Johnson, the Hawks have a chance today due to the Suns’ inconsistency.

Heading into tonight’s game, the Hawks rank 6th in the NBA in PPG, 14th in FG%, 17th in 3PA, 19th in 3P%, 5th in FTA, 24th in turnovers and 6th in rebounds . For Glass cleaningAtlanta ranks 15th in points per 100 possessions, 18th in successful field goal percentage, 19th in turnover percentage, 8th in offensive rebounding percentage and 9th in free throw rate.

The Hawks currently rank 28th in PPG allowed, 22nd in field goal percentage allowed, 30th in three-point shooting percentage allowed and 30th in three-point shooting percentage allowed. According to Cleaning the Glass, Atlanta ranks 19th in points per 100 possessions and 28th in effective field goal percentage.

Phoenix will enter this game ranked 17th in PPG, 12th in FG%, 14th in 3PA, 7th in 3p%, 11th in free throw attempts per game, 25th in rebounds, and 10th in rebounds. in terms of losses. According to Cleaning the Glass, the Suns rank 13th in points per 100 possessions, 10th in effective field goal percentage, 13th in turnover percentage, 27th in offensive rebounding percentage and 6th in free throw rate.

Defensively, Phoenix ranks 19th in PPG allowed, 14th in FG% allowed, 15th in 3PA% allowed, and 21st in 3P% allowed. On a clearing the glass basis, Phoenix ranks 23rd in points allowed per 100 possessions and 15th in effective field goal percentage allowed.

With Johnson unable to play tonight, it will be on Trae Young’s shoulders to try and lead the Hawks to victory. On Tuesday, Young had another game against Utah where he scored 20 points and 20 assists, finishing with 24 points and 20 assists. Phoenix will likely try to protect him with rookie Ryan Dunn, who is a very solid defender, but Young is a completely different test.

Dyson Daniels was somewhat overshadowed by Young’s performance and game-winning shot, but Daniels flirted with a triple-double on Tuesday night. Daniels scored 16 points, seven assists and six rebounds while going 7-12. He can be the primary defender and playmaker whenever Young comes on the bench, and he does that quite decently. Daniels will also be tasked with guarding Booker today (which is no easy task) and trying to limit his scoring.

Zaccharie Risacher had one of his better performances this season on Tuesday night against Utah. He scored 14 points on 6-14 from the field and had six rebounds. If Johnson doesn’t play, Risacher will defend Kevin Durant today, although the Hawks could use Vito Krejci for that purpose.

Krejci had a solid game for Atlanta on Tuesday, scoring 13 points and shooting 3-4 from three. I expect he will start again without Johnson.

The squad will be led by De’Andre Hunter, Bogdan Bogdanovic and Garrison Matthews (and a substitute). Bogdanovic and Matthews were not on a hot streak until the fourth quarter, but Bogdanovic hit two big shots to keep the Hawks in the game. They went a combined 4-15 from three and it’s hard for Atlanta to win when two of their best scorers are shooting like that. Hunter bounced back from two rough games to score 17 points and hit four of his seven three-pointers against the Jazz. The bench will play a huge role in helping the Hawks win tonight.

How the Hawks are able to protect Durant may be the biggest mismatch in the game. Durant is almost unguardable, but the Hawks don’t have a great option in the starting lineup and I would expect Hunter to see a lot of minutes on him off the bench. Atlanta couldn’t guard Lauri Markkanen on Tuesday due to his size and shot combination. They may have had issues with Durant for the same reason.
