A Moreton Bay man charged with murder, kidnapping and torture after an alleged Richlands robbery

A 52-year-old man who died earlier this week was allegedly kidnapped along with two others in southwest Brisbane and subjected to “extreme violence” in an alleged attack that may have had links to outlaw bikers.

On Friday, the police charged a 31-year-old man with murder, torture and kidnapping. They are looking for more people in connection with an alleged robbery in Richlands on Sunday evening.

The man died in hospital on Tuesday, two days after the alleged attack.

Police were called early Monday morning after a man was taken to Logan Hospital with significant head injuries. He was taken to a specialist center, where he died.

The Birkdale man was arrested at a house in Griffin, north of Brisbane, at around 11am.

Police brought in investigators from Task Force Maxima, which targets outlaw bikie gangs, Detective Inspector Chris Knight said.

Asked whether outlaw motorcycle gangs were involved, he said police had “certainly considered that potential.”

“The scale of violence in this case exceeds even normal expectations. This is not an unprecedented situation, but it is very unusual,” he said.

Police say the meeting is “coordinated.”

He alleged that all the people involved knew each other.

“Detectives allege the deceased and two friends met the defendant and others on Rudyard Street, Richlands, at around 6.30pm on Sunday evening,” he said.

“In this place they were taken against their will and under the threat of extreme violence.

“They were taken to another location where they were subjected to more violence for several hours.”

He said what happened on Sunday was “certainly coordinated” and that it was a planned meeting.

Two of the dead man’s friends were also injured, one of them with a broken leg and the other with “quite serious facial injuries”, Inspector Knight said.

“Their safety is crucial to us. “Surviving victims must be treated very delicately,” he said.
