Threatened, asked to remain silent: Survivor

According to TOI, the 35-year-old survivor, who hails from Bulandshahr, married her husband from Gulaothi in 2010 and has four children – two boys, aged 13 and 3, and two girls, aged 11 and 7.

Her husband works as a car mechanic in Saudi Arabia and usually visits home once or twice a year. Her ordeal began when her husband returned home with two friends three years ago and allegedly “allowed” them to rape her.

“Both men live in the same locality in Bulandshahr and often attacked me even when my husband was abroad and recorded their actions. When I met him, he told me to keep quiet when he was paid,” the woman explained.

However, even after her husband returned to Saudi Arabia, the abuse continued and this time the man watched videos recorded by his friends.

“My husband was watching videos on his cell phone while sitting in Saudi Arabia. I remained silent for the sake of my children because he threatened to divorce me,” she is quoted as saying.

The woman, who is currently in her first month of pregnancy, bravely sought justice and filed a complaint at the police station.

Investigation ongoing

An investigation is currently underway after the woman and her family met Bulandshahr Senior Superintendent of Police Shlok Kumar to lodge a complaint.

“Since the case is three years old, the local police will conduct a thorough investigation and appropriate action will be taken,” Kumar told TOI.

The survivor’s brother, who also works as a car mechanic, revealed that their family only found out about the ordeal recently when the woman’s husband returned home.

According to him, there was an argument between the spouses, after which the woman finally gathered the courage to speak out against her husband.

“She remained silent for the sake of her children and the family’s reputation. She is currently almost a month pregnant. We demand justice. Her husband and his associates are trying to flee abroad to avoid arrest,” he said.

The Pelicot case sparked a “change of shame” in France

The case in Uttar Pradesh is reminiscent of the Gisele Pelicot case in France, where the woman suffered years of similar abuse orchestrated by her husband.

72 years old
Dominik Pelicot he confessed during a three-month trial regarding the drugging of his wife between 2011 and 2020 in their home in the village of Mazan in Provence. He then admitted inviting men he met online to his home to rape and abuse his wife while she was sedated and unconscious.

The abuse came to light in 2020 when three women accused Dominique of trying to film their skirts in a supermarket. As a result of the investigation, police found 20,000 photos and videos depicting rape and other forms of sexual abuse on electronic devices confiscated from his home.

But what made this case so historic was the fact that Gisele, who had the option of a private trial, decided to go public with the proceedings to raise awareness for other victims of sexual abuse.

“I speak on behalf of all women who are drugged and don’t know it, I do it on behalf of all women who may never know,” she said, becoming a symbol of female resistance to male violence.

Her courage in the face of unimaginable trauma made her a feminist icon both in France and abroad. “I want all women who have been raped to say: Madame Pelicot did it, I can do it too,” she said in a speech BBC report.

Recently, a court sentenced Dominique to 20 years in prison. The court also convicted all 50 other defendants, without acquittal.
