Latest ceasefire talks

American and Arab mediators made some progress in efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, but not enough to seal the deal, Palestinian sources close to the talks told Reuters on Thursday.

Qatar, the US and Egypt are trying to reach an agreement to end fighting in the 15-month conflict and free the remaining hostages before President Joe Biden leaves office.

“We are making real progress,” Biden told reporters at the White House.

“I still hope that we will be able to carry out a prisoner exchange,” he said, adding that Hamas was standing in the way. The president said he met with negotiators on Thursday.

President-elect Donald Trump has warned that there will be “hell to pay” if the hostages are not released by the Jan. 20 inauguration.

Negotiations have been at an impasse for a year over two key issues.

Hamas has said it will release the remaining hostages only if Israel agrees to end the war and withdraw all its troops from the Gaza Strip. Israel says it will not end the war until Hamas is disbanded and all hostages are released.
