Former champion Jamel Herring arrested for alleged domestic violence

Court records show former junior lightweight champion Jamel Herring was arrested Thursday night in Ohio on domestic violence and assault charges.

Herring, 39, was booked into the Warren County Jail in Ohio to await arraignment. His bail was set at $50,000 for the alleged assault and $75,000 for the alleged domestic violence.

The next hearing in the Herring case is scheduled for January 21.

Herring (24-5, 12 KO) retired following a defeat to Jamain Ortiz in May 2022. The former Marine wrestled under the Top Rank Promotions banner on ESPN for years before retiring.

Herring won the WBO 130-pound title in May 2019, defeating Masayuki Ito by decision. Herring has made three successful defenses during his reign, with decision wins over Lamont Roach (who challenges Gervonta Davis in March) and a sixth-round TKO over former champion Carl Frampton.

Herring lost the title to Shakur Stevenson in October 2021 via 10th-round TKO. In the next fight he lost to Ortiz.
