Petaluma, 30-year-old man arrested after fight outside New Yorker

William Werner is alleged to have seriously injured another man during an altercation in the city centre

Petaluma police announced Thursday that a 30-year-old Petaluma man has been arrested on suspicion of seriously injuring another man last month in a fight near a downtown pizzeria.

On Wednesday, January 8, officers with the Petaluma Police Department’s Community Impact Response Team arrested William Werner, who allegedly injured another man in a argument outside The New Yorker pizzeria police said December 22. Werner was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and battery causing serious bodily injury.

Police said Werner’s arrest followed an investigation that included checking video surveillance cameras downtown and video of the assault provided by a witness.

“A felony warrant was issued for Werner, who was ultimately arrested, for assault with a deadly weapon and battery inflicting serious bodily injury,” police said.

The fight broke out around 1:50 a.m. outside the pizzeria at 3 Petaluma Blvd. N. Officers arrived at the scene and found the victim, whose identity has not been released, unconscious. Due to his serious injuries, he was taken to a local hospital where he was treated.

Police did not disclose the type of injuries or the victim’s current condition. They also did not reveal what weapon Werner allegedly used.

Werner was booked into the Sonoma County Jail.

“I thank the numerous community members who provided tips that were instrumental in moving the investigation forward,” police said in a statement Thursday. “We are grateful for our partnership with the public that allows Petaluma to continue to be safe.”
