Tokyo police say the injured students do not know the woman with the hammer

Tokyo police say some of the students injured in Friday’s hammer attack at a local university told them they did not know the attacker.

Eight students suffered head or arm injuries when they were attacked while attending classes at Hosei University’s Tama campus in Machida city just before 4 p.m.

Police arrested 22-year-old sophomore Yoo Juhyun, a South Korean national who studies at the school’s Faculty of Social Sciences.

Police say about 10 minutes into class, the suspect suddenly stood up and moved from her third-row seat to the back row. She then started attacking the other students.

The suspect reportedly told investigators that she felt frustrated after being bullied and ignored by her colleagues. She said she had previously found a hammer in another classroom and put it in her pocket.

Four of the eight injured students told police that they either did not know the suspect personally or were only introduced to her.
