Repeat offender charged with kidnapping and stabbing

Jan. 11 – A Sanford man with two prior domestic violence convictions and probation violations was charged with second-degree kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, assault on a female and resisting a police officer on Nov. 3, 2024.

According to eCourts, Otis James Haynes Jr., 34, of 5100 Amber Lane, was arrested after he allegedly punched Jasmine Jade Jones in the face, cut her with a kitchen knife and interfered with Officer Samuel Truelove during an arrest.

Haynes was held on a $60,000 secured bond by District Court Judge Frank Wood in the case, but has an additional $10,000 bond stemming from two later charges of interfering with emergency communications and misdemeanor common assault. These latest bonds were established on December 10, 2024 by Judge C. Winston Gilchrist.

According to the court document, Haynes admitted to transmitting the threats on October 5, 2022, when he threatened to harm Jones by text message and via social media. District Court Judge Paul A. Holcombe III sentenced him to 45 days in jail, suspended with credit for two days served and one year of probation.

Haynes was convicted of assault on a woman and criminal damage to personal property on October 14, 2016. The complainants in this case were J. Kelly and Shawn Jones. Haynes received a 60-day suspended sentence with credit for 21 days served. However, probation was revoked on January 10, 2018, and Haynes was ordered to serve the remainder of his 60-day sentence.

Haynes was charged with carrying a concealed weapon on April 10, 2014, but that charge was dismissed, according to eCourts.

His arraignment on the latest charges is scheduled for January 27.
