Five people were injured in a multi-vehicle collision on a highway

Five people were taken to hospital after a multi-vehicle collision on a motorway in County Durham.

A section of the A1(M) between junctions 61 Bowburn and 60 Chilton has been closed following an earlier accident.

Neither the ambulance service nor national roads have yet confirmed exactly what happened or how many vehicles were involved in the incident.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesman said four emergency vehicles were dispatched to the scene at around 0900 GMT.
