Woman from St. Croix arrested for allegedly stealing a Whirlpool refrigerator from a Home Depot warehouse

ST. CROIX — A former employee of The Home Depot, identified as Sheba Young, 48, has been arrested and charged with numerous crimes, including grand larceny, embezzlement by an employee and conspiracy.

According to a VIPD report, the arrest follows an investigation into the theft of a Whirlpool refrigerator valued at $1,288.

VIPD’s Economic Crimes Unit initiated an investigation on December 16, 2024 after The Home Depot filed a complaint. Store surveillance footage shows that Young allegedly left the premises with the refrigerator without paying for it. The video also shows Young convincing an associate to help load a refrigerator onto the associate’s truck.

Authorities say Young fraudulently appropriated the refrigerator for her own or another person’s use, using her position as a store employee to commit the theft.

On January 10, 2025, detectives from the Commercial Crimes Unit executed an arrest warrant at Young’s residence at 388 Castle Burke. She was advised of her rights and taken into custody without incident. Young was taken to the Wilbur H. Francis Command Police Station, where she was arrested and charged with grand larceny, embezzlement by an employee and conspiracy.

Young’s bail was set at $35,000. Unable to post bail, she was remanded to the John Paul II Adult Correctional Facility. John A. Bell, where he awaits a Counsel of Rights hearing scheduled for Monday, January 13 in the Supreme Court of the Virgin Islands.

The VIPD Economic Crimes Unit stressed its commitment to combating these types of crimes and ensuring accountability for those who use their positions for personal gain.
