Narail diary attack: 11 days later, no arrests yet

Police are yet to arrest any suspects, 11 days after unidentified assailants stabbed a local journalist in the town of Narail on December 30 last year.

The incident occurred at Sheikh Russell Bridge at around 11.30 p.m., when Somoy TV’s Narail district correspondent Syed Sajibur Rahman Sajib was returning to Narail on his motorcycle via Sheikh Russell Bridge.

Talking to this correspondent, Narail Sadar police station superintendent Md Sajedul Islam said that a journalist had lodged a case against four to five unidentified persons at the police station yesterday evening (Friday evening) in connection with the attack.

No arrests have been made yet. The prosecutor’s office added that actions are underway to arrest those involved in this case.

Police said that after the attack, locals and police took him to Narail Sadar Hospital. Sajib’s condition was critical as his abdominal injuries were severe. He was later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Speaking to The Daily Star, the journalist, who was recently released from treatment in Dhaka, expressed frustration over the delay in filing the lawsuit.

“Since I was undergoing treatment in Dhaka, it took me some time to reach Narail and file my case. However, it is deeply disappointing that the police have not yet identified or arrested any suspects,” he said.

He called on the authorities to quickly arrest the perpetrators and ensure justice.
