Gardaí have launched a murder investigation after a 50-year-old woman was stabbed to death at her home in Co Cavan last night.

Police found the woman at her home in the countryside near Ballyconnell at around 9.30pm last night.

It is known that she was stabbed several times.

A 60-year-old man, whom the woman knew, was also seriously injured in the attack and was taken to Cavan General Hospital, where he is in a serious but stable condition.

A man in his 30s was arrested elsewhere under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 and is currently detained at a police station in the area.

The woman’s body was taken to Cavan General Hospital for a post-mortem examination and the scene was secured for technical examination by the Garda Technical Office.

Local councilor John Paul Feeley said the tragedy had shocked the local community as he paid tribute to the woman’s family.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this very difficult time. “It’s a shock not only for those who knew her well, but for the wider community,” he said.

“It’s a very rural, close-knit community. For something like this to happen is a huge shock for everyone.”

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

The investigation is being conducted from the incident room at Cavan Garda Station. A senior investigation officer and a family liaison officer will be appointed in due course.
