North Riverside shooting: Knife gunman Jose Evans killed in police-involved shooting on Cermak Road, 4th Avenue: authorities

NORTH RIVERSIDE, Ill. (WLS) — Police in the western suburbs shot and killed a man with a knife on Sunday afternoon.

Authorities said the police-involved shooting occurred around 3:47 p.m. in the 8500 block of Cermak Road in North Riverside.

According to the police, officers called to a disturbance found a man armed with two knives. Officers shot at the man while defending another person, North Riverside police officials said.

Officers immediately treated the man and then transported him to Loyola Medical Center located next door, where he died from his injuries.

Family members told ABC7 the man who was shot and killed by police was 31-year-old Jose Evans of Crest Hill and claims he was suffering from a mental disorder when officers arrived.

Family said Evans was in North Riverside visiting his girlfriend. Outside the hospital where he died, ABC7 spoke with his mom, Donna Evans, and cousins.

The family says they understand he was armed with knives, but cannot understand why officers couldn’t have used other methods to de-escalate the situation.

“I want to know what happened… my son is mentally ill and he was shot,” Donna Evans said. “I came to the hospital and they won’t even let me see him.”

The family is looking for answers and hopes there is additional video evidence of the incident.

“There are bean bags and you can hit them with other things to knock them down,” said cousin Jesus Sanchez. “These officers should be trained. They should be able to shoot someone in the leg as long as they don’t kill the person.”

Police said it was a domestic incident and there was no threat to the public. No officers were injured.

“The North Riverside Police Department is fully cooperating with the State Police Public Integrity Task Force as it conducts a comprehensive investigation into the incident,” police said in a news release.

Further information was not immediately available.
