Wood from a logging truck will be used to light 60-meter bonfires at the UP ski jumping tournament

ISHPEMING, MI – This ski jumping tournament hosts the ‘biggest and baddest bonfires in Yoop’ – said the organizers.

An entire logging truck will be used to light the bonfire at the 138th annual Ishpeming Ski Jumping Tournament. WLUC reports. The Ishpeming Lions Club is already preparing bonfires, which include birch bark and logs taller than adults. The flames will reach about 60 feet high.

REXCITED: Ski jumping will return to the UP “Suicide Hill” for an event that has been held since 1887

The tournament is scheduled for Friday and Sunday, January 17-19, at the Suicide Hill of the UP Nordic ski complex. The competition is part of the regional Four Hills Tournament and the United States Cup, making it a destination for ski jumpers from all over the country. Jumps are planned for all three days, including the junior tournament on Sunday. Cross-country runs are also planned. The organizer of the event is Ishpeming Ski Club.

“It’s amazing,” Dan Perkins, a member of the Ishpeming Lions Club, told WLUC. “If anyone hasn’t seen these jumps at night, they should definitely make a pilgrimage to Ishpeming to see this amazing tradition.”
