2 people dead in cattle attack in Duk

At least two people were killed on Sunday in a cattle raid in Duk County, Jonglei State, authorities said.

In an interview with Radio Tamazuj, Duk County Commissioner John Chatim Ruei said that among the dead was a local youth who met his fate while fighting the attackers who attacked 4,000 cattle.

The incident occurred in the village of Anyiel on Sunday at 5 p.m., when our youth were returning home from the pasture. They were ambushed and 4,000 cattle were taken from them,” he said. “However, they chased down the attackers, recovering all the cattle. In the process, a young man went missing, and a body was found on the attackers’ side.”

The commissioner accused armed youths suspected of coming from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) of involvement in the attack.

However, Jacob Werchum Jouk, GPAA information specialist, said they were unaware of the attack and that none of their youths had left to attack elsewhere.

Cattle raids are common among communities in Jonglei State and their neighbors in the GPAA. Last month, armed youths from Jonglei State attacked GPAA’s Gumuruk County and raided 15,000 cattle.
