Supreme Court decides on challenges to Delaware, Maryland gun law

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to consider complaints regarding gun laws in Delaware and Maryland.

Justices rejected an appeal by a group of gun enthusiasts and pro-gun groups in Delaware to block the state’s ban on assault rifles and high-capacity ammunition magazines after a lower court refused to grant a preliminary injunction against the ban.

Delaware’s gun safety laws were passed in 2022 and ban a variety of semi-automatic “assault” long guns, including the AR-15 and AK47, although they allow pre-law owners of such weapons to store firearms under certain conditions, according to Reuters.

Your High Courtwhich has a 6-3 conservative majority, also declined to hear a case challenging Maryland’s handgun licensing requirements, which require people to undergo safety training, be fingerprinted and have a background check before purchasing a handgun.

A three-judge appellate court panel struck down the law after a landmark 2022 Supreme Court ruling that expanded gun rights and said firearms laws must have strong roots in the country’s historic traditions, although the Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals The full House later reinstated the law after a majority found it fit with historic firearms laws.
