The weather caused concrete to fall from the M8 Kingston Bridge after an inspection was ordered

A program of “reactive inspections” is to be carried out on the Kingston Bridge after concrete fell from it on Monday.

Officers were called to Paisley Road West under the M8 motorway in Glasgow at around 3am after reports of debris.

The road was closed while concrete was removed before reopening.

Amey sent engineers to the site to check the area. The company identified a “deterioration” caused by unfavorable weather conditions.

Several inspections were carried out to locate areas that may require maintenance.

A spokesman for Amey, the company that maintains the South West trunk road network on behalf of Transport Scotland, said: “Yesterday morning, Amey’s on-call structural engineer attended the site and inspected the affected area, allowing Paisley Road West to reopen.

“To ensure the structural integrity of the Kingston Bridge complex and public safety, which is paramount, Amey conducts a series of routine inspections at varying frequencies each year.

“However, recent severe weather has caused deterioration that could not previously be identified. Following this incident, a reactive inspection program will be carried out throughout the structure. If necessary, these inspections will allow for future maintenance work to be undertaken at this location.”

At the time of the incident, a Police Scotland spokesman said: “At around 3am on Monday, January 13, 2025, officers received reports of concrete falling from a bridge over Paisley Road West in Glasgow.

“The road was closed but has been cleared and reopened.”
