Men involved in fatal shooting ‘knew each other for several years’

EMMET COUNTY. Mich,. (WPBN/WGTU) – – The Emmet County Sheriff’s Office on Monday identified a man who was shot over the weekend following a fight at a home near Petoskey.

The man was Joshua Van Allen, 34, of Springvale Township.

Sheriff Matt Leirstein said the incident happened Saturday in the same town when Van Allen was visiting a friend’s home.

Leirstein says the two “had known each other for several years.”

The investigation is ongoing, so Leirstein couldn’t even say who was suspected of firing the shot.

However, Leirstein says it was an isolated incident and there is no risk to the public.

“We go where the evidence takes us. Once the investigation is complete, we’ll put everything into a report for the prosecutor to review. But at this stage there is no telling where this will lead us. We’re really in the early stages of everything,” Leirstein said.

Leirstein says the Michigan State Police crime lab was on site.

And the Little Traverse Bay Bands Tribal Police.

We do not know the exact location of the house, only that it did not belong to Van Allen.
