Road closed for Kingston Bridge inspection due to weather conditions causing falling concrete

Many roads will be closed overnight after severe weather conditions caused concrete to fall off a highway bridge.

Officers were called to Paisley Road under the M8 motorway in Glasgow at around 3am after reports of debris falling from Kingston Bridge.

The road was closed while concrete was removed before reopening.

Amey sent engineers to the site to inspect the area and found “deterioration” due to unfavorable weather conditions.

The company has now confirmed that the Paisley Road carriageway between Seaward Street and Dalintober Street will be closed on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday to allow emergency works to be carried out.

Inspections will take place at night:

8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 14 to 5:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 15

11.30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 15 202.5 to 5 a.m. on Thursday, January 16

8:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 16 to 5:00 a.m. on Friday, January 17

An Amey spokesman said: “Yesterday morning, Amey’s on-duty structural engineer attended the scene and checked the affected area, which allowed Paisley Road to reopen.

“To ensure the structural integrity of the Kingston Bridge complex and public safety, which is paramount, Amey conducts a series of routine inspections at varying frequencies each year.

“However, recent severe weather has caused deterioration that could not previously be identified. Following this incident, a reactive inspection program will be carried out throughout the structure. If necessary, these inspections will allow for future maintenance work to be undertaken at this location.”

At the time of the incident, a Police Scotland spokesman said: “At around 3am on Monday, January 13, 2025, officers received reports of concrete falling from a bridge over Paisley Road in Glasgow.

“The road was closed but has been cleared and reopened.”
