The Charleston Animal Society shared the news of Caitlyn’s death on social media Monday evening after receiving information from the pet’s family.

“We are devastated to share that our sweet Caitlyn peacefully crossed the rainbow bridge on Sunday, surrounded by love,” wrote Ted, Danielle, Regin, Sully and the family who took in the abused dog.

The family said Caitlyn became ill last week and was diagnosed with advanced and aggressive cancer.

“True to her nature, she fought until the end,” the family said. “Caitlyn was a beloved member of our family and we miss her dearly. She loved us as much as we loved her and we will never forget her. For us, it is a reminder of how fleeting life can be and that we should all treasure the time we spend with our loved ones because tomorrow is not guaranteed.”

In September 2015, Caitlyn was taken to an animal welfare organization after she was found with duct tape wrapped tightly around her snout, cutting off the blood supply and clenching her teeth on her tongue.
