5 people were injured, 1 in critical condition, in a house fire at night

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Five people were injured, one seriously, in an overnight house fire on the city’s southeast side.

Grand Rapids firefighters rescued three victims.

Two adults and three children were at the home at 501 Griggs St. SE, east of College Avenue, when firefighters were called at 3:58 a.m. on Wednesday, January 22, for a report of a house fire.

After reaching the site, firefighters began to extinguish the fire, saving the people inside. Firefighters rescued three of them, one escaped through a ground floor window and the other through a second floor window.

All victims were taken to local hospitals. One adult remains in critical condition.

Firefighters remain on scene and look for hot spots. The West Michigan chapter of the American Red Cross was contacted to assist the victims.

The Grand Rapids Fire Department reminded residents to have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in their homes. People living in their own homes can call 311 or 616-456-3000 to schedule a safety assessment for free installation of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
