Miami Dolphins in 2025 NFL Free Agency: Guards on target.

Miami Dolphins in 2025 NFL Free Agency: Guards on target.

play

The Miami Dolphins must add two linebackers before the 2025 NFL season, regardless of whether it’s a team 2025 NFL Draft or free agency.

Guardians don’t have to cost $100 million as Robert Hunt did.

(That’s why Hunt now plays for the Carolina Panthers and not the Dolphins.)

Robert Jones and Liam Eichenberg worked hard but were judged by Professional focus on football as the 59th and 69th best NFL cornerback in 2024.

Keeping Jones, Eichenberg, or Isiah Wynn as a third defenseman for 2025 makes sense.

NFL free agency: Miami Dolphins you need to add guards

But Miami needs to add two starting defenders. Ideally, they’d be mobile and athletic, but also able to kick ass.

Miami needs more nasty (on-field) ass kickers.

Eichenberg received nine penalties and allowed 29 tackles last year, per PFF.

Jones received seven penalties and allowed 28 pressures per PFF last year.

Miami should absolutely select at least one guard in the first three rounds, and preferably two rounds, of the NFL Draft in April.

But Miami should also try to sign at least one of these guards who are scheduled to be free agents:

Trey Smith, 25, Chiefs

Skinny: Trey Smith is dominant, but may be out of Miami’s price range.

Teven Jenkins, 26, Bears

Skinny: Teven Jenkins turned out to be much better in defense than in attack.

James Daniels, 27, Steelers

Skinny: James Daniels will have a torn Achilles in week four.

Will Fries, 26, Colts

Skinny: Will Fries broke his leg in Week 5, but he can still make big money.

Aaron Banks, 27, 49 years old

Skinny: Aaron Banks would fit into Miami’s system and improve the game.

Patrick Mekari, 27, Ravens

Skinny: Patrick Mekari can play defense and offense, which would appeal to Miami.

Will Hernandez, 29, Cardinals

Skinny: Will Hernandez suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 5.

Nate Herbig, 26, Steelers

Skinny: Nate Herbig has a torn rotator cuff; he can also play center.

Dalton Risner, 29, Vikings

Skinny: Dalton Risner was PFF’s 22nd-ranked guard in 2024; better in pass pro than running.

Evan Brown, 28, Cardinals

Skinny: Evan Brown was PFF’s No. 29 guard in 2024; better in pass pro than running.
