The Delhi Police on Sunday formed multiple teams to investigate camps where women’s personal information is allegedly being collected. The move comes after Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena ordered an inquiry against private individuals for allegedly collecting women’s personal details in the name of enrolling them in the Mahila Samman Yojana. The LG ordered an inquiry after receiving a complaint from Congress leader and party’s New Delhi Assembly candidate Sandeep Dikshit.

DCP to supervise the investigation

According to a police official, senior officers will form teams and the investigation will be supervised by DCP officers. “There are 15 police districts in Delhi. We have directed senior officers to form teams and properly investigate the entire matter. The teams will coordinate and work under the close supervision of DCP officials,” said a senior police officer.

On December 25, Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit met LG and raised concerns about data security during Mahila Samman Yojana registration. After this meeting, LG ordered a probe.

In a letter addressed to the principal secretary and police commissioner, the LG principal secretary wrote: “The honorable Lieutenant Governor wished the Chief Secretary to conduct an inquiry through the Divisional Commissioner into the collection of personal details and forms by non-government people.”

The letter also said that the police commissioner can direct field officers to take action in accordance with the law against any person who violates the privacy of citizens by collecting their personal information to enroll them in “benefits”.

Mahila Samman Yojana

Mahila Samman Yojana was proposed in Budget 2024-25, AAP has announced that it will give Rs 1,000 every month to women registered under this scheme. However, ahead of the 2025 Delhi elections, Arvind Kejriwal announced to increase this amount. He announced that Rs 2,100 would be paid monthly to all adult women if his party returns to power for a third consecutive term after the assembly elections in February.

Registration lasts from December 23. AAP volunteers register women for the program. Kejriwal said women fully support the program and over 22 million people have registered so far.
