Gang rape of a teenager in Chakaria, case filed against 6 people

A case has been filed against six people in connection with the gang rape of a teenager in Chakaria, Cox’s Bazar by the victim’s father.

According to police, of the eight suspects arrested in connection with the incident, four were identified as people associated with the victim. The police sent the four people to court after their arrest was officially confirmed. The remaining four were considered suspects.

Manzur Kader Bhuiya, officer-in-charge (OC) of Chakaria police station, confirmed the news.

“Since the incident, the police have continued efforts to arrest those involved in the incident. Last Monday, three suspects were detained, and another five yesterday (January 7). Four identified by the victim were included in the case report, while the remaining four were sent to court as suspects, he said.

However, the investigative committee did not reveal which four people the victim identified.

Seven names were reported among the arrested suspects. The suspects identified are Mohammad Kajol (23), Mohammad Bashir (38), Mohammad Shahjahan (27), Tajul Islam (18), Sojib (25), Chhoton (25) and Amit Hasan (25).

Manzur Kader said the 15-year-old victim returned home after receiving treatment at the One Stop Crisis Center at Cox’s Bazar District Hospital.

He assured that police activities are ongoing to identify and arrest the people involved in the incident.

According to reports, the victim arrived at Badarkhali station in Chakaria from Chattogram by bus last Sunday evening. While waiting for the vehicle to return to her village in Maheshkhali, at the eastern end of the Badarkhali-Maheshkhali connecting bridge, she was abducted by assailants who threatened her with sharp weapons and took her to a nearby isolated place, where eight youths attacked her.

In response to the incident, protests and rallies were held at Badarkhali station in Chakaria Upazila and Cox’s Bazar city on Monday, demanding the arrest of those involved.
